Cesare Angelotti, a recently escaped prisoner and revolutionary, hides in a church where his friend Mario Cavaradossi agrees to help him escape. Cavaradossi paints a portrait and sings a comparison of the subject’s appearance to that of his lover, the singer Floria Tosca. When the sound of a cannon reveals that Angelotti’s escape has been discovered, the two quickly flee. Baron Scarpia and his soldiers enter looking for Angelotti when Tosca enters. Scarpia convinces Tosca that her lover is being unfaithful to her, and she rushes to Cavaradossi’s house. The soldiers secretly follow, hoping to recapture Angelotti.
Scarpia’s soldiers have captured Cavaradossi and torture him for information about Angelotti. When Cavaradossi won’t reveal anything, Scarpia invites Tosca in, who reveals Angelotti’s whereabouts in order to spare her Cavaradossi more torture. The group receives news that the revolutionaries have won another battle. After seeing Cavaradossi’s delight in this victory, Scarpia orders his execution. Tosca bargains with Scarpia to save her love, and he eventually agrees that the execution will be fake, so long as Scarpia has his way with Tosca. Scarpia agrees to this deal in writing, and Tosca immediately stabs him and escapes.
Tosca finds Cavaradossi and informs him of the fake execution plan, and of Scarpia’s death. As the firing squad shoots, Cavaradossi falls. Tosca realizes that Scarpia betrayed her and that her lover has truly died. The soldiers find Scarpia’s body and run to capture Tosca. Tosca climbs onto a nearby roof, realizing she has lost everything, and leaps to her death.
Finger Lakes Opera will be presenting Tosca on Friday, August 11th at 7:30pm and Sunday, August 13th at 2:30pm at the Canandaigua Academy Theater. Sung in Italian with projected English supertitles.
